Hidden Figures

Janelle Monae, having already conquered the realm of music, is turning an eye to film. She’s starring in the upcoming drama Hidden Figures, directed by Theodore Melfi (who directed St. Vincent with Bill Murray). It’s about the African-American women who played a huge role as mathematicians during the space race in the middle of the century. Janelle joins the great Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer as the film’s central trio (she’s on the poster and everything). Coming out on January 13, 2017, you can watch the trailer below..

Before that, you can see Janelle in Moonlight from director Barry Jenkins (who made the excellent Medicine for Melancholy) which is out October 21. It’s a coming-of-age story about a young African-American man in Miami coming to terms with his sexuality. One of the most-anticipated films during the fall “awards season” of releases, Midnight also stars The Knick‘s Andre Holland, Naomie Harris, and newcomer Trevante Rhodes in the lead. The film premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival and will then play this year’s New York Film Festival. The trailer simply looks fantastic and you can watch it below..

Meanwhile, Janelle also recently shared the new song “Hum” from Baz Luhrrman’s new Netflix series The Get Down.
