Well that was a finish for the history books. After Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced La La Land as winner of Best Picture for the 2017 Academy Awards, and after a number of speeches had been made, it became clear something was awry. Then Jordan Horowitz, one of the La La Land producers went up to the microphone to announce “There’s been a mistake. ‘Moonlight’ won,” he told the shocked audience at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.”It’s not a joke. This is not a joke, come up here.” Beatty and Dunaway had been given the Best Actress Award envelope by mistake and in the confusion, Dunaway announced La La Land.
La La Land still won six Oscars, including Best Director, Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Score, and Best Song; while Moonlight ended up also taking home Best Adapted Screenplay and a Best Supporting Actor win for Mahershala Ali. Justin Timberlake opened the ceremonies with “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from Trolls (nominated, but not a winner), and the night also included a fair amount of politics, a surprise cameo from a busload of unsuspecting tourists, candy parachuted to the audience, more than a couple of moving speeches (none more so than Viola Davis’) and pretty good hosting job by Jimmy Kimmel. It went too long, but that’s the Oscars.
