The Oscars weren’t the only awards show in town (Hollywood) this past weekend. The Film Independent Spirit Awards happened on Saturday (2/25) which also awarded Moonlight with Best Feature (no envelope mix-ups here). In keep with the award’s looser, more outlier attitude, the shebang with hosted by comedians and Oh Hello stars Nick Kroll and John Mulaney who brought a little of that meta-Borscht Belt vibe to their very funny opening monologue that took potshots at the celeb-filled crowd — hello again, Warren Beatty — and the even-more-left-leaning-than-the-Oscars crowd. “Some of you may take the opportunity to make a political statement in your speech,” Kroll began. “That is your right,” Mulaney continued, “but bear in mind we are on IFC, and these are The Spirit Awards. So in terms of impact, you could give your speech directly into camera, or you could whisper it to yourself in the bathroom.” Watch Nick and John’s monologue and check out the list of 2017 Independent Spirit Awards winners, below.
